A Partner to Help Develop, Foster, and Grow Our Sales Team

To be honest, I helped write a job description for a sales manager and it bombed. I wrote an encyclopedia based on my experience in IT Sales Management over the last 12 years to try and lay out what Cambridge Computer wants and needs in its next sales leader. Reflecting back on it, it looked like a punch list you have for your real estate agent before you sign papers.

What it should have said is that I am looking for a partner. You will work with me, our C-suite, and a myriad of other talented individuals to coach and develop our sales force, currently at about 26 salespeople, who run the gamut from just beginning in sales to experienced salespeople, some who have been with the company almost from its very beginnings. I want to work with someone who has a passion for coaching, sales rep development, and not afraid to either go down with the Titanic or find a big enough oar. Someone for this role has to understand how to build relationships in two sometimes conflicting or complimenting directions at the same time, working with business partners and vendors while at the same time fostering great relationships with our clients. We want someone who can balance working with and also hiring both entry-level and experienced salespeople. We also want someone who embraces the challenge of handling complex sales strategies among a team with diverse skill sets where each project requires customization and one-off project planning.

What we have waiting for you is an unbelievable team and company. It’s a company that no matter what role you play, you understand you come to work every day to enable our team to do more for their clients and whatever it takes to win over new ones. It’s a company that has been here for 30 years and steadily grows by adding new sales and technical personnel as well as infrastructure to accommodate the complexity and diversity of the modern data center our clients manage. With the breadth and depth of over a 150 different technologies in our portfolio, our clients trust that we can find the best solutions for them no matter what their criteria. In short, if you know in your heart that coaching people to a win is more gratifying than getting just one of your own, you want to come work with us.

So what do we need from you to ensure that you can nail this? You need experience being an individual contributor and an indirect contributor. Ideally, we think you need 8 years of experience, with at least 3 managing and a bachelor’s degree. Further, it’s important you understand the technology we sell. You won’t need a Ph.D., but you also need to know that VMware isn’t a type of Corningware and Dell isn’t lemonade from Rhode Island. Moreover, you have to be organized and exercise good discipline with our management tools like our CRM. You would work out of our Waltham office, and need to be able to get there within 45 minutes on short notice. Lastly, current authorization (or authorization expected soon) to work in the United States on a full-time basis is required.

In short, you may be reading this, sitting at your desk, at an organization where you’re known by your employee number and an ever-growing sales quota with dwindling resources. You want to make an impact and be a big fish in a smaller pond. You want the gratification knowing that you helped someone, and saw how much they appreciated your effort in guidance. You want to feel challenged, and that people are in a foxhole with you. If you want all of those things, and more, come partner with us. Take it from someone who’s been here for 10 years.

Best,

Scott Gay
